Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a reason Shakespeare chose Venice as the setting for "The Merchant of Venice"?

Is there some portent to Venice that aids this play somehow, or could Shakespeare have set the story anywhere without it affecting the play?

Yes, there is. Without it, The Door-to-door salesman of Venice wouldn't really be the same.

During that time, Venice was an important trade center for merchants.

How is Shylock (Merchant of Venice - Shakespeare) the villain?

Any low-down on how Shylock is the villain. I am "prosecuting" him in a legal summation for my english giving out. Any ideas would really help. Thankyou.

You have to think back on when the play was written. In Elizabethan times Antisemitism was rife. The hypocrisy of it was that Antonio and his like were acute to go to the Jewish moneylenders when they were short of funds and yet they still despised them

How in the Merchant of Venice how does Shakespeare balance the play?

Hi,
I righteous wanted to know how there is balance in the Merchant of Venice i have been pondering it and can't come up with anything?
Thanks

There is and isn't a difference. If you're looking for a balance in the blatant racism all the way through, then you're on a losing battle.

However, he does control the more serious antonio/Shylock story with the light and fun love stories. Cathy C | Oct 17, 2009

Why is there a use of disguise in Shakespeare's, "Merchant of Venice"?What does it symbolize?

The Sales rep of Venice by William Shakespeare

I am not solid it symbolises anything but the reasoning is to allow the freedom for Portia to move and speak freely in a high society where women are not allowed to do so.

Somewhere in Hamlet (the Shakespeare variant) and also in ‘Braids’.

Look it up if you must, but it is there.  It is upsetting to smoke that in watching my favorite movies, I am only quite entertained and interested by the first 2 acts (out of three).  ‘Casino Royale’?  I expend interest after that first trusted forsake, and find I cannot sustain to regard the scenes in Venice.  ‘Iron Man’? I preference the break and am very foolish of the scenes in the submit with Yinsen and the stake of that nascent relationship.  Also liking when he’s edifice the man.  ‘Avatar’?  After the ‘Tree of Wishes’ sweetness, I’m gone.  The battles, the confrontations with villains, the exhortations and shouting and gritted teeth: fitting not interested.
